Data Documentation for... THE PROMOTION OF PREVENTIVE BEHAVIORS IN HEALTHCARE SERVICES General Information This work analyzes how the threat to freedom and safety affects preventive health behavior of the elderly. The study focuses on elderly people. This cross-sectional quantitative study shows that the adoption of preventive measures can be improved by reducing the perception of threat to freedom, with the aim of reducing, in turn, the reactance or defensive response. Information on preventive measures should be aimed at improving the perception of autonomy and reducing negative cognitions. The research also highlights that communication campaigns should give priority to the risks associated with the severity of the threat over those associated with vulnerability to the threat. Variables The measures of the items under study, based on 7-point scales, were derived from existing research and discussed qualitatively with experts. Following the work of Fridman et al. (2020) and the World Health Organization (WHO, 2020), participants were asked to rate their degree of compliance with six COVID-19 preventive health behaviors on a 7-point scale, ranging from 1 = "Not at all" to 7 "To a high degree"). Loss of freedom was measured via a 3-item scale (Gardner and Leshner, 2016; Kim and Youn, 2019; Hu and Wise, 2021). Participants were asked to indicate their degree of agreement with items stating that the preventive measures analyzed in the research go against freedom of choice, get in the way of what people want to do, and pose a threat to their freedom. The threat to freedom can trigger anger and negative cognitions. Anger was measured using four items; irritated, angry, annoyed, and, offended (Gardner and Leshner, 2016; Hanus and Fox, 2017; Hu and Wise, 2021). Negative cognitions were assessed using a 4-item scale adapted from previous research (Hanus and Fox, 2017; Kim and Youn, 2019, Hu and Wise, 2021) expressing the degree to which actions are perceived as reasonable, fair, pleasant, and timely. For security threat, perceived severity and perceived susceptibility were measured using an 8-item scale based on previous research (Rippetoe and Rogers, 1987; Itani and Hollebeek, 2021; Witte 1996).
